Amy and James Thomas have been on a whirlwind of adventures with their Sugar wheels.

James lectures all over the world on his medical specialty, Laryngology. Amy says “Our number one priority is to travel together. The next priority is to travel with our bikes!”

James was offered back to back keynote lectures in Belgium and the Philippines. Of course, he explains, the seemingly practical way to reach both places was with an around the world flight itinerary. “I was able to book our travel with long layovers, beginning in New York City and at the end in Tokyo.

“We strongly prefer having our favorite bikes with us,” Amy says “OPEN carbon fiber bikes with Sugar carbon fiber wheels allow us to maintain a light-weight travel profile.”

“We truly immerse ourselves in a new place on a bike.” Amy says. “We wander and interact with locals far more than we would with any other mode of transportation: most-recently, from the serenity of Europe’s rolling countryside to the manic chaos of inner-city Manila, Philippines.”

“I love my Sugar wheels. The day I got them, I got a PR on Rocky Butte, and have been consistently faster ever since. What a difference an awesome set of wheels makes!”

“I love to explore the less-travelled routes. I have my little gravel obsessions. I will spend an entire season devoted to exploring one area: Gifford Pinchot, Central Oregon, or my latest fascination: the Fifteenmile Creek area around Dufur.”

“The thing I love about cycling is the ability to experience your surroundings from a different perspective. You can cover more ground than on foot and slow enough to appreciate the nature around you.”

“Cycling has brought me through some pretty hard times including 3 major surgeries, and a continuing battle with thyroid cancer. My recovery is going so well that I’ll be able to run again soon. But the bike will always be my favorite, now!”

“There’s something spiritual about riding a bike and being able to think critically about how you can tackle challenges. Emotions are magnified tenfold. It’s a great time for reflection — and as humans I feel like being able to reflect and gain clarity are essential. Why not do it while pedaling for hours?”
