Amy + James Thomas take their Sugar wheels all over the world as they travel for work and play.

Their latest adventure took them to Oman. They poked around date farms, persevered over mountain passes and soaked in the expansive views from on high.

“We know where we intend to go and we don’t know where we will go until we are done.”
– James

Remove travel requires an abundance of details to worry about – your wheelset should never be one of them.

OMAN BIKE TRIP DETAILS

Amy and James based their bike rides out of the home base of Bait al Aali, a bike-friendly inn in Al Hamra, Oman.

James says Al Hamra is a nice central location to the Hajar Mountains of Oman. As a 400-year-old town, it has a rich history. Amy and James found plenty of gravel routes for biking over the mountains.

As a female cyclists traveler, Amy says the people of Oman were very friendly to her. “I had heard good things about Oman from several of my woman friends who hiked there and it was just gorgeous.”

EXPLORE THE WORLD BY BIKE, RELIABLY

Bike riding and bikepacking in the the far off, remote places that James and Amy do requires a lot of planning, and careful gear selection.

The couple has matching Open Cycles bikes outfitted with thoughtfully selected Sugar Wheels. They know they can rely on their wheels and their bikes to get them though even the toughest of terrain.

“I love to explore the less-travelled routes. I have my little gravel obsessions. I will spend an entire season devoted to exploring one area: Gifford Pinchot, Central Oregon, or my latest fascination: the Fifteenmile Creek area around Dufur.”

“The thing I love about cycling is the ability to experience your surroundings from a different perspective. You can cover more ground than on foot and slow enough to appreciate the nature around you.”

“Cycling has brought me through some pretty hard times including 3 major surgeries, and a continuing battle with thyroid cancer. My recovery is going so well that I’ll be able to run again soon. But the bike will always be my favorite, now!”

“There’s something spiritual about riding a bike and being able to think critically about how you can tackle challenges. Emotions are magnified tenfold. It’s a great time for reflection — and as humans I feel like being able to reflect and gain clarity are essential. Why not do it while pedaling for hours?”
